Brisbane childcare centres need daily sanitising of toys, mats, tables and touchpoints, dedicated nappy change and bathroom protocols, child-safe chemical storage and use, and documented cleaning records available for NQS assessment.
- 1Childcare cleaning is governed by the National Quality Standard, Quality Area 2.
- 2Toys, mats and sleep surfaces need documented sanitising cycles, not ad-hoc wipes.
- 3Low-toxicity, fragrance-free chemistry is expected in occupied areas.
- 4Every cleaner on site needs a current Blue Card.
Daily non-negotiables
Early learning environments have the highest touchpoint density of any commercial setting, and the users put their hands in their mouths. Frequency beats intensity.
- Tables, high chairs and eating surfaces — sanitised before and after every meal
- Nappy change areas — disinfected after every change plus a full end-of-day clean
- Toilets, potties and hand basins at child height — twice daily minimum
- Sleep mats, bedding areas and cot rails — daily wipe-down
- Door handles, gates, light switches and taps — daily
- Hard floors and soft-fall areas — daily
| Item | Frequency | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Nappy change area | After each use + daily detail | Detergent then disinfect |
| Toys (mouthed) | Daily | Wash, rinse, air dry |
| Toys (general) | Weekly | Wash and sanitise |
| Sleep mats & linen | Per child, per use | Laundered, individually stored |
| Floors & soft fall | Daily | Detergent, low-fragrance |
| Carpets & rugs | Quarterly | Hot water extraction |
Chemicals and child safety
Chemical selection in childcare is a genuine risk decision. Use low-toxicity, fragrance-light products where possible, apply them after hours or with children absent from the area, and allow surfaces to dry fully before children return.
All chemicals must be stored locked and out of reach, with current SDS records on site. Decanting into unlabelled spray bottles is a common and serious finding at assessment.
- A visible, current cleaning schedule with sign-off
- Chemicals stored locked and out of reach
- Colour-coded equipment separating nappy areas from kitchens
- Evidence of toy sanitising cycles
- Blue Card records for contractors
Evidence for assessment and rating
Under Quality Area 2 and Quality Area 3, assessors want to see that hygiene practices are systematic. A cleaning contractor who supplies a signed daily checklist, periodic schedule, chemical register and staff training records makes that conversation short.
Periodic work matters too — carpet and soft-fall extraction quarterly, toy library deep sanitise during holiday breaks, and vent and fan cleaning six-monthly.
Frequently asked questions
Do childcare cleaners need a Blue Card in Queensland?+
Cleaners working while children are present generally require a Working with Children Check (Blue Card). Many centres require it for all attending staff regardless of hours as a matter of policy.
Should cleaning happen while children are at the centre?+
Core cleaning is best done after hours. Spot cleaning and bathroom checks during the day should use low-hazard products and follow the centre's supervision policy.
